Bedtime Rules

We are pretty strict about bedtime here at our house. Jody and I decided early on in our parenting that getting enough sleep is not only important for our kids but also for the parents! Once the kids go to bed its mommy and daddy time uninterrupted.

I have a few funny things regarding recent bedtime happenings after I share our typical bedtime routine. I know that this routine isn't doable for everyone. I talked to another mom from Hattie's preschool class the other day. Her husband doesn't come home in the evenings until 8:30 or so. But it definitely works for us! Everything in our routine is subjectible...it depends on what we have been doing, like church activities, or something like that. So these times are give or take 15 minutes.

Jennings Bedtime Routine

6:45 Bath
7:00 Brush teeth, pj's on
7:15 Read books (usually everyone picks their own book and we read all together)
7:30 Each to their own bed, pray, lights out

Jennings Bedtime Rules

1. You are not allowed out of your bed for any reason. Permission can be given to use the bathroom.
2. Call backs are for emergencies. (Jody says this sounds like we are MEAN parents, but come one. You all know that stalling at bedtime can result in NUMEROUS call backs for random, unimportant things)

Recent Bedtime Happenings

Silas: He told me one day recently that he has the earliest bedtime of any one in his class. WHY?? I told him that he is also one of the smartest little boys I know and that is because people who sleep more learn better. He liked that answer. I also told him that Gage and Emma have the same bedtime he does. That really satisfied him.

Hattie: She "sleeps" with SO many odd things in her bed. We have had to make a new rule for her. She can't take any more books or toys (or shoes or purses...) to bed with her until the ones that are in the bed currently are put away.

Luke: He is the one who has challenged us the most on the staying in your bed rule. The other night, Hattie called me. I said, "this better be an emergency" as I walked in. Luke popped up out of Hattie's covers and said in a funny innocent voice, "I just wanted to snuggle!" I sent him back to his room and laughed my way back down the hall.

Millie Grace: Is starting to fit herself into this bedtime routine right along with everyone else! Yay!! She goes to sleep around 7pm or so, I wake her to feed her one last time before I go to bed around 10-11pm and have been waking her up in the mornings around 7. Hattie is happy to finally have a roommate!

Jose and I are also pretty "strict" when it comes to bed time. WE have the same two rules: you can't get out of bed (except to go to the potty...which, by the way, both must use the potty right before getting into bed to illiminate the need for this rule) and no call backs (though I have not called it that)...they just know that when the lights go out, they must go to sleep. I LOVE having kids that go to bed when we tell them to. But you know? It started when they were very small...like yours, too! Victoria likes to have things in bed with her, like Hattie, but not at night, at nap time. At which time, I have to remind her that this is not play time,it is rest time and she needs to sleep. thanks for sharing! blessings!

I'm glad Silas was satisfied after telling him Gage and Emma have the same bedtime. With the time change here, bedtime battles are beginning because it's VERY HARD for kids to go to bed when it's still light out. I hate spring forward time change. Gage has the same complaint, that he has the earliest bedtime in his class. I told him the same thing, that's why you're the smartest!

Our daughter is 8 and she has a bedtime between 7:30 and 8, depending on how tired she is. I agree with an early bedtime - kids need a lot more sleep than they usually get!

I wish I could say the same...Ava just had a sleep study and has sleep apnea, so maybe once she gets her tonsils taken out, we'll get some sleep around here?!?

Oh, I couldn't agree more with a steady bedtime routine! It has been a lifesaver on the road. That is SO funny about Luke needing some extra cuddle time=)

We have pretty much the same routine and same rules! I always tell Sara (she's the only one who pushes the rules), "Save your questions until morning." Our kids go to bed between 8:30 or 9, but that's because we don't have to wake them up early to go to school. :-) Morning routine is where we struggle the most...

Ok for all of you "seasoned" mommies I have a question about bedtimes. My son (5 1/2 months) is now going to bed around 7 or 7:30. At first I was so excited. Then I realized how my life had just changed. Here are my questions...what do you do for things like church nights or other events that end at 7 or later? Do you come home early? Or do you just move the bedtime back?

Also how do you have people over at night? We have people over to eat a lot but now when the baby goes to sleep he will wake up when he hears people talking in the next room. Do your guests leave at a certain time or will this get better with a bigger place to live? (we are moving in a few months)

Just wait til they're teenagers! Bedtimes somehow just don't work as well. As I speak, the 14yo is doing schoolwork and the 16yo is washing dishes...and it's 10:25pm!! No, we don't enforce them for two reasons: (1)the 14yo can sleep in because she's homeschooled and can do schoolwork on a different schedule and (2) the 16yo gets up at 6:30 am for school and as long as she gets up well in the morning and keeps her grades up she will learn how to schedule herself. Some nights I freak out about having kids around 24/7 and send even the big ones to bed by 9:30! Otherwise, I force them to bed when I go by taking the phone, tv remote control, and logging out of the computer, leaving them with nothing to do but sleep. They just hate going to bed...I guess all kids do! Even I sometimes do! lol I guess we're all just big kids. lol Your bedtime routine looks great and I love having the little guys in bed early, too.
